Novocontact bits have an oval shape at the cannon to increase the surface area in contact with the tongue without thickening the bit at the commissures. During normal contact, the wide surface acts in the mouth. If the rider intensifies this contact during a stronger hand action, the bit turns slightly forward and the narrower surface acts in the mouth for greater precision and efficiency. The oval shape allows the rider to act with the two thicknesses of the barrel depending on the hardness of his hand. Novocontact double snaffle bits are ideal for horses that need a bit of support but will not accept a harder bit.
